Second draft of my Tragically Hip essay

Gord Downie fueled The Hip’s fame?

Gordon Edgar Downie, (Gord Downie) once said, “Music brings people together. So my function in anything I do is to help bring people closer in.” Downie has accomplished this by writing and performing music with his band called “The Tragically Hip.” Downie has contributed several pieces of music to Canada, which are also considered gifts by many Canadians, to enjoy, share, and talk about “together.” If it wasn’t for Downie, the well renown name in “ The Tragically Hip” would have never reached the same popularity level as they have in today’s society. Downie won many hearts over through his song lyrics which incorporate stones and myths about life in Canada.
Gord Downie kicked off his music career in Kingston, Ontario, at a high school called Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute. Here, he befriended musicians, who would ultimately join forces with him, and become The Tragically Hip (The Hip). The Hip started off in 1983, and consisted of five men including: Gord Downie, Rob Baker, Johnny Fay, Davis Manning, and Gord Sinclair. Three years later, Saxophone player Davis Manning left The Hip in exchange for Guitarist, Paul Langlois. This band was Downie’s first step into achieving his goal of becoming a successful musician.

Downie, and The Hip, began their careers  playing cover songs in bars all across Canada, for loose change, and almost instantly transitioned into becoming famous. Once Music Corporation of America (MCA Records) president, Bruce Dickinson saw Downie and The Hip preforming at the Horseshoe Tavern, a bar in Toronto, he quickly recognized the talent of the group, and pounced on the opportunity to sign The Hip to a record deal. Downie was already tasked with a tough role in being the lead singer, but he later would have to take on an even bigger role in the band.
Downie and the Hip released 17 albums together, all which were written by Canadian Icon, and lead singer, Gord Downie. All 17 albums have currently rose to the Canadian Billboard Chart, including 2005 album “Yer Favourites” which is currently the number one album in Canada. Along with “Yer Favourites”, three more albums written by Downie have risen to the top 10 on the Canadian Billboard Chart. These include ”Man Machine Poem,”which was the band’s first album, “Fully Completely,” and finally “Up to Here.” Ultimately, many Canadians were in love with the stories told in every lyric produced by Gord Downie.

Overall, Downie is a Canadian Icon, who made The Tragically Hip what they are today.
Without Downie, The Tragically Hip would have never gained the same amount of recognition as they did. Every lyric produced by The Tragically Hip, has ultimately been written by Gord Downie. Canadians are truly in love with the style in which Downie writes. Every lyric tells a story, or myth which Canadians fantasize over. Downie’s intriguing lyric scheme has made him what he is today, and he deserves every bit of fame in which he encounters throughout his life.

Dear everyone of interest,

I would like to inform you about my most recent creation, my blog. The purpose of my blog is to document my learning progress, and to hopefully attract different people who work in the fields of business. If this blog is able to attract many people, it could help jumpstart my path into becoming a business man. This blog will also help in many other ways, but one in particular is developing confidence in my own work for the public to see.

At Cedar Ridge High School (CRHS) we have a wonderful new class called “21st Century Literacy” This class main focus is on two subjects including, English, and Business Technology. This class does not only focus on these two subjects, but it also educates you about a good 21st century learner and the skills needed to succeed. By doing so, students will be prepared for the future, and will  have already developed skills needed to succeed in the workplace. Students are also treated and respected like a colleague to the educators. Students always have a voice in the respected decisions being made, ranging from work due dates,  special events, or to just how the class is formatted.

Hopefully this quick blog summary has interested you.  If you are interested in learning more about me as a leader, person, or just the kind of content I produce, my blog is most certainly the place for you!

Cordially,

Sahil Arora

Five Reason Why I love Hockey

Hockey has been my number one passion since I was mentally capable of remembering and processing things. Just the excitement and goosebumps I get when somebody talks about hockey are truly indescribable. In a way hockey is a therapeutic way for me to clear my mind, and is a true stress reliever. Hockey is my world outside of this world. If hockey didn’t exist, I don’t think I would exist, just the feeling when you dig your skates into the ice and feel the smooth gliding between your feet and the ice are magical. My favourite aspect of hockey is scoring goals. I have a drive to put the puck in the net every time I get on the ice. My blog is for me to not only document my personal learning, but it is for me to input personal stories about me as a person. What better opportunity would I get to show people my true passion!

1.) Equipment
This is probably my most guilty pleasure about hockey. Equipment is extremely costly, and sometimes the equipment I have been ranting about to my parents may not match their approvals/wallets. Hockey sticks are probably my favourite pieces of equipment, but are also one of the most expensive pieces of equipment. Every Time I visit a hockey store, which allows you to test out hockey sticks, I jump on the opportunity. Unfortunately the $350 stick I was trying out is considered way too expensive. But fortunately this equipment goes on sale on black friday!

2.) Game Day
Game day is the most important but yet most fun time in hockey. Although you really need to focus on gaining points for your team to hopefully make the playoffs, you learn overtime to put the pressure aside and enjoy every second that you are on the ice.Your teammates, and crowd are two main components, as they help take the stress off of you. Your teammates act as a support unit, who go to battle with you and keep you focussed on playing the game, while the lively feeling of the crowd really lightens your mood and keeps you pushing.

3.) Scoring
As you might be able to tell, I am really motivated to score, as it provides a feeling which is unlike anything. Knowing that you have accomplished something which benefits not only you, but a group of people you are extremely close with, really makes me even more motivated to get the next goal. Scoring is also one of the most fun components of hockey, due to the hard work, required to accomplish it.

4.) Teamwork
Teamwork is a huge part of my game. If I haven’t included someone in a component of a play we are going to perform, I feel like I have done something wrong. Once you excel and achieve the heights of a competitive level, hockey becomes all about teamwork. If you ever want to succeed you need all five guys on the ice to contribute every shift. The tempo of the game is just too high for one individual to score every shift. Cooperation, more specifically sharing the puck, is one of the most important parts of hockey, as ultimately it’s the only thing that will win you consecutive games.

5.) Hard work
Hard work is the only way you will achieve anything in life, as it is the key to every success story. I have personally been through a lot of adversity when it comes to hockey, but the only way to tackle adversity, is to be hard working. Every Time I fail to meet a personal goal, I work even harder to tackle it. In hockey, there were always those years where I would get cut from a team which I knew I personally worked hard enough to make. So every summer I would push myself even harder just to tackle my goals. Whether it was going to the gym, or playing more hockey my mind was set on proving to myself that my hard work pays off.

Donald's assessment

For Donald:
In my opinion, you opened the debate in a rather lively fashion from the business standpoint. Overall, I can really identify the amount of passion you have in becoming the president because of your body language, and enthusiastic tone in your voice. You are always very dialed in, attentive to the points being presented by Secretary Clinton, and you are always very eager to contradict an invalid point. Throughout the debate, I felt like you were a little too eager, as you interrupted Secretary Clinton several times, 28 to be exact. Next time, you should let Secretary Clinton complete some of her points, and then await acknowledgement from the moderator, and respond in full with regards to the topic in play. I really enjoyed the wide variety of knowledge you had to offer on commerce throughout the debate, but maybe next time you could dig a little deeper, and focus on multiple topics instead of one.

Summary:
Overall, I felt like the debating strategies used by Donald in comparison to mine were very two- sided. I feel like Donald and I would share strategies such as:being attentive, dialed in, and the use of a very energetic tone. I don’t think I would be interrupting nearly as much as Donald, but I would certainly feel the urge/need to interrupt at times. If there were two things I would take away from this debate, they would be to further expand on more than one topic, and to always maintain my calmness.

Reflecting on the debate, I felt like Donald was extremely engaged, but more often than not he found himself defending against questions posed by Secretary Clinton. At times his defence came into handy, including his response to not paying income taxes. Trump’s debating strategies are rather strong, but he must remember to keep his cool.
